Nuclear Medicine is the study of the molecular basis of disease. Nuclear Medicine images are metabolic maps
of the function of the human body.
Often, before a disease shows up as a structural abnormality, such as seen with conventional X-ray, something
goes wrong at the level of the chemical function of the cell. Nuclear Medicine tests allow the early detection
and effective treatment of disease.
Nuclear Medicine tests use a small amount of radioactive material, called a radio tracer, to diagnose and treat
disease. The tests are safe because only small amounts of a short-lived radioactive material are used. The tests are
effective and can detect a wide variety of diseases such as cancer, heart disease and infection.
After the radio tracer is administered it travels to the target organs and tissues. The radio tracer gives off
radiation known as gamma rays. The gamma rays are detected by a specially designed camera connected to a computer.
Images and measurements are obtained.
