In 1897, Dr. Charles Gritman set in motion a vision for medicine that would advance the health and wellness of people throughout our region.

While our house calls may no longer happen by horse and buggy, Dr. Gritman’s hospital has continued to set the standard for providing exceptional care in the 125 years since our founding. Our nurses, providers and staff see patients today with the same passion and integrity that Dr. Gritman instilled upon his hospital’s staff at the time of our founding.

We’re commemorating our 125th anniversary in 2022 by looking back on our rich history as an independent, nonprofit and community-led health care system while simultaneously planning for our future. From our first location inside the McGregor House Hotel to today’s modern and compassionate clinic network, patient care continues to be the foundation for everything we do.

As you’ll see in this issue of Connections, we’re growing our surgery programs with the opening of Gritman Orthopedic Surgeons and the arrival of Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. Marvin Kym and Orthopedic Certified Nurse Practitioner Sunshine Huffman. We’re strengthening access to care with new and established family medicine providers throughout our clinic network. And we’re fostering an established relationship with regional nursing schools to bring new and exceptional nurse residents into our hospital through a program led by our Education Department.

It’s through the support of our community that we continue to thrive and expand services to better serve patients. I’m especially thankful to the generosity of community partners Ed and Beatriz Schweitzer for their contribution toward a new neurology space—which you’ll see chronicled on the coming pages—as we continue to expand services to meet the needs of our region.

We’re excited about a bright future as our region’s hospital and health care system. We recently gathered community stakeholders for a Community Open House to share these stories and more as we work to build the next generation of patient care. It’s all possible because of the framework Dr. Gritman set in motion 125 years ago.
