Kevin Haley, Latah County, Total Knee Replacement
Kevin Haley is an avid hiker and backpacker, hiking three miles each day with his dog. He faced lingering effects in the years after a horse landed on his leg and had been worried before knee surgery about maintaining the same level of activity.
“Now I don’t think about it, I just go,” he said of his life post-surgery.
Dr. Marvin Kym with Gritman Orthopedic Surgeons had come up in discussions among friends looking at hip and knee replacement surgery, and Haley said he felt confident in getting the procedure after a consultation with the experienced surgeon.
Haley had his total knee replacement in January 2023 at Gritman Medical Center, followed by six months of physical therapy with Gritman Therapy Solutions.
“I’m really happy with the outcome,” he said. “I was very happy with the treatment in the hospital, too. Everyone was attentive. It was just a great experience.”
Haley is also an advocate for Gritman’s Total Joint Replacement Class, which takes place twice each month at Gritman Medical Center. Each 90-minute class is free and is designed around the expectations patients have for their own movement in the weeks before and after surgery. Representatives of Gritman Medical Center and Gritman Therapy Solutions teach the course with an eye toward accelerating recovery of their patients.
“They walk you through expectations and everything, I thought that was really good and informational,” Haley said.
A year removed from his surgery, Haley is back on the trails and feeling confident in his new knee.
“I think it’s fabulous,” he said.
