Knee Surgery Gets Lewiston Man Back on the Trail

Dr. Marvin Kym Helps David Bradley Return to his Previous Active Lifestyle

Like many Idaho residents, David Bradley of Lewiston enjoys hiking steep trails and feeling his boots grip into the soil while targeting the next summit. But when a past knee surgery reached the end of its useful life, Bradley knew he needed medical intervention. He turned to Dr. Marvin Kym of Gritman Orthopedic Surgeons to get him back on the trail again.

“A few years ago, I could walk 10 miles at a time,” said Bradley, who describes himself as “freshly retired” from a career in sales. “But recently, I was only managing a mile.” Since Bradley’s wife uses a wheelchair, he also found himself challenged when trying to push her from location to location.

“I could have foregone surgery, but to live the life I wanted to live, I needed to go ahead and do it,” he said. “I wanted to return to the quality of life I had four years ago.”

Bradley had had surgery with Dr. Kym previously at another hospital. He was so pleased with his treatment that he decided to take the drive up from Lewison to Moscow to see Dr. Kym again.

“I am impressed by his extensive knowledge, his confidence, honesty and humbleness,” Bradley said of Dr. Kym. “He admits that no one is perfect. But I think he comes close.”

Dr. Kym was able to schedule knee surgery on Bradley’s left knee within a month of Bradley’s initial consultation. Bradley was admitted to Gritman at 6 a.m. on Sept. 16, 2024 and discharged at 11 a.m. the following morning.

“I was flabbergasted with how professional everyone was, especially at 2 o’clock in the morning,” he said.

He completed inpatient Physical Therapy at Gritman Therapy Solutions and additional Physical Therapy in Lewiston. Dr. Kym was in regular contact with the Physical Therapist and addressed all of Bradley’s questions about pain levels and the speed of recovery.

Bradley is continuing self-therapy every two days, such as knee bends and walking. “My knee feels very sturdy now,” he said. Bradley is now looking forward to the many hikes ahead of him.
