It’s a goal he’s tried to live up to for nearly 15 years as the frontline Food Services Aide most staff and patients interact with each day when ordering food at the Courtyard Café.

“I enjoy the people that I work with and the environment that we have here in the kitchen and in the café,” he said. “It’s like a second family.”

His persistent optimism, as well as the quality of his service, is frequently highlighted by staff members and the public. It’s one reason why Brandon has been awarded the 2022 Gritman Way award – given annually to a team member who personifies our Mission, Vision and Values.

Food Services Director Todd Unger notes that Brandon’s social demeanor makes him the ideal person to interact with patients and the public through the Courtyard Café.

The Gritman Way Award is given out each year to a team member who exemplifies Gritman Medical Center’s values: Compassion, Integrity, Collaboration, Accountability, Respect and Excellence. Nominate an employee at gritman.org/nominate.

“Brandon is one of the highlights of my day,” he said. “Every morning he has a smile on his face, ready to make everyone feel great. Brandon’s enthusiasm for his job shines with every interaction. He is all knowing – the likes and dislikes of our guests. He always makes customers feel special and valued, taking that extra step.”

The hospital surprised Brandon with the award at the first hospital-wide staff meeting of 2023, a decision met with a resounding round of applause.

“I feel really appreciated. I feel like I work hard for that every single day. And to know that people throughout the hospital recognize that’s what I do, I just want to say that I appreciate their nomination for me,” he said. “I’m thankful to them for recognizing me for this award.”

It’s easy to pick up on Brandon’s cheerful demeanor. Brandon himself calls upon his religious upbringing and a plaque at the hospital entrance touting Gritman’s values of Compassion, Integrity, Collaboration, Accountability, Respect and Excellence when he strives to provide extraordinary service.

“When I clock in every day, I try to provide that promise, not only for our staff, but for our patients,” he said.

In addition to his work in Food Services, Brandon volunteers at multiple community events throughout the year and serves on the committee that trains staff members in the service etiquette we strive toward in every interaction throughout the Gritman System.

Whether he’s serving lunch to a team member, escorting a guest to our annual Pink Tea and Pink Cocktail event or helping others understand the benefits of the Gritman Way, Brandon always has a smile on his face.

“I love the environment and I love our community,” he said. “I feel that’s my way of giving back to the community, and I feel that’s my way of giving back and working at the hospital.”
